The Fool.

Reason has its rightful place in the microcosm of things, but at large I've always been ruled by spirit. I'm most myself when I'm terrifically tangled and twirling in the powerful vortex of passionate freedoms that I always seem to seek out and choose to exist in. That isn't to say that I operate on folly or a total ignorance of the order of things—it's just that I find it unbearable to ignore when something is stirring in me.

Jessica Dore, a social worker and tarot practitioner who writes about the cards from the perspective of behavioral psychology, writes that the character depicted in The Fool card "relates to reality as the nomad relates to place: in full participation, tasting local berries, making medicines with the plants, bathing in the cool waters. Because the landscape of reality is always changing, The Fool keeps an eye toward the emergent. When the time comes to leave, they know it. And so they go."

To me, this means learning to make space for the thousand cascading truths that exist at once, stretching our minds to hold them all in right time, and being light in the feet so we can circulate and flit from one to the next as needed. The Fool's aim isn't to usurp anyone as they move from one place to another, but rather to just sit together awhile: to break bread and swap stories and share in experiences. And when it's time to move on, to leave the place changed from what it was before they came.

I want to be honest with you—I'm not sure what I'm doing here yet. Thousands of miles away from the place I've always called home and tasked with building a new life in a new place (and not really knowing what any of it means yet), The Fool's story resonates with me here. But something told me it was time to go, and so here I am! I'm moving forward (or maybe sideways, who knows) with faith, curiosity, and a whole lot of unknowns. I think that's often where all the good stuff is.

I've been here a mere couple of weeks and despite the increasingly chilly weather, I couldn't have asked for a warmer welcome. I'm feeling blessed by some seriously thoughtful housewarming gifts, amazing new connections, and a million sweet suggestions on things to do around town. As the thick of the cold season approaches, I really want to get my traditional Chicago winter initiation underway—the holiday market, bars with fireplaces, cozy café dates, I'm there for all the clichés. So, December's date special is this: Let's indulge in the simple delights of the season. We engage in some winter festivities in town for an afternoon of hot cider, cozy treats, and some lighthearted magic. We warm our souls with food, drink, laughter, and my favorite winter-weather playlist while curling up to fan the flames. (3 hours: 1,100) This can certainly be amended to my time in the Bay Area too! While the best holiday present is, to me, making space to spend time and company together, I've compiled a small holiday wishlist should you feel inclined to bring something along when we meet, or to send something my way from afar. Never expected, but always so eternally grateful and full of appreciation! And now that the obligatory announcements are out of the way:

I've been doing lots of travel this month, and am looking forward to the day-to-day slowing down of things that this time of year always seems to usher in as the days grow shorter. There is so much I still have to learn about my new surroundings (I'm eager to get out to the Wild Blossom Meadery tasting room and take a tour of their facility—they make the best mead, my absolute favorite) and am glad to have some time to really settle in and set my intentions for the rest of 2021, and for the new year to come. Of course, I'm equally as excited for my next brief return to the beautiful Golden State—I'm surely going to be needing some of that California sunshine by the time I get there this season! And speaking of sunshine, I'll be unavailable for the beginning of January as I spend the first days of the new year getting whisked off to a dreamy desert getaway. That means the rest of my January schedule will be filling up fast! You can ensure a spot on my dance card by filling out my booking form or sending an email to get pre-screened for a future date; it's going to be a dizzying few months, in all the best ways. In the meantime, keep up with my goings-about via my Twitter and Instagram.

May we all work towards greater kinship with the strange.

xoxo, L
